Letter Vv Week

We began our week of the letter V by reading the
Magic School Bus Blows Its Top
A Book About Volcanoes
By: Gail Herman
They loved the story of how the school children traveled with their teacher in a magic school bus deep in the ocean to discover how volcanoes are born.

After reading the book it was time to make a Homemade Volcano. This was so much fun.
You can read that post HERE if you would like to try this too.

After all the excitement died down we made another volcano. This one will go in their ABC Binders
For this craft I drew a volcano shape on brown construction paper. The kids colored on their volcano and cut them out and glued to another sheet of paper. Then added red, orange, and yellow streamers for the hot lava shooting out.  I found this craft here.

Letter Vv Lapbooks
We read and colored in our Vv books together. The kids worked in their lap books throughout the week, with size sorting violins, tracing and pre-writing the letter Vv, and drawing a volcano in their books. Inspiration for this lap book came from here.

On the back they worked on patterns again this week.

V is for vase
Here I drew the letter V on construction paper and they colored and cut out. Then glued to another sheet of paper. I cut flowers and leaves to add to the top for their vase. These will also go in their binders. Craft found here.

More Vases

We made another vase using TP rolls
 Supplies Used:

  • TP rolls
  • craft sticks
  • glue
  • tempera paint
  • marker
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • paint brush
  • construction paper (I pre-cut the flowers and leaves)

They first painted their TP rolls, and set aside to dry.

Next used their marker to color their craft sticks green for the stem.

Next they gathered their flowers and began putting the pieces together.
And here they all are below.
We made this a couple of years ago as an Easter bouquet for Mom.
We used patterned paper for the flowers.

V is for Vegetables
The kids put together a vegetable plate. I pre-cut these the night before and thought they would enjoy this craft. They talked about the vegetables they were placing on their plates as if it were real!
They said "I really don't like radishes or celery!" Meaning they really didn't want it on their plate! Haha!

They also worked on Vv sounds sheet.

More pre-wrinting

And that was our week!

4th of July Star Wands

This is the second year we've made these and they love them!

        Supplies Used:
  • red, white, and blue stars (I cut these with cardstock) different sizes
  • red, white, and blue, wire star garland (purchased at Dollar Tree)
  • craft dowel rods (from Wal-Mart .97)
  • glue
  • pop dots
  • scissors

We used one blue star, two white stars, and two red stars for this craft.

They began by gluing the stars together. Red on white, then white on blue.
Then they flipped it over to add the dowel rod.
Added a pop dot on each side of the rod to hold it in place and added another white star and red star on top. The stars stick to the pop dots as well.

Then added the garland by wrapping it around the dowel rod.

Foto Friday #16: Red, White, and Blue

Hi Everyone!
So I guess by now you know I will be hosting Foto Fridays!
I am so Super Excited and I hope everyone will continue to participate.
When I received an email from Kim at Mom Tried It asking me if I wanted to take over and
host Foto Friday I nearly screamed! I did except right away!
This will only push me forward as to learning more and more about photography.
I received my birthday present early, a DSLR camera and a 75-300mm lens!
Can I say I'm over the moon thrilled!
So make sure to come back next Friday to join in.
The theme will be "favorite"
Meaning one of your favorite photos that you've taken

Now on with my submission for
Red,White, and/or Blue

This sign is an icon pretty much in down town Baton Rouge.
It has sat on top of a building for as long as I can remember.
I had no intention at all to submit this picture for the theme this week.
In fact, I already had a picture ready. But as I kept looking at this one
the more I loved it! People drink lots of cokes here, so I thought
it would be perfect with the red and white, and cheat with the sky being a
beautiful blue.

Grand Old Flag Craft

I love the 4th of July, not only do we celebrate America's birthday, we celebrate mine as well!
Monday I will be closed so we started working on our holiday crafts this week.
This one should have been posted yesterday, but our modem went out!

I was told this was a very fun craft by the kids!

         Supplies we Used:
  • blue pre-cut squares of construction paper
  • red cardstock
  • white tempera paint
  • star sponges
  • sponge paint brushes
  • glue
  • scissors
  • paint tray

They began here by gluing the blue square in the top left hand corner.

With the sponge paint brush they painted the white stripes for the flag.

Then added the white star with the star sponge on the blue square

This really was a fun patriotic craft!

You're a Grand Old Flag

by George M. Cohan
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.
Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.
You're a grand old flag,
You're a high flying flag
And forever in peace may you wave.
You're the emblem of
The land I love.
The home of the free and the brave.

Ev'ry heart beats true
'neath the Red, White and Blue,
Where there's never a boast or brag.
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

Have A Happy & Safe 4th of July!

Homemade Volcano

This morning we began with our letter V by reading a story about Volcanoes!
The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top A Book About Volcanoes
by: Gail Herman
They loved the story of how the school children traveled with their teacher in a magic school bus deep in the ocean to discover how volcanoes are born.

So on with a science experiment!
They could hardly contain their selves when I said we were going to build a miniature volcano.

I found this over at Pocketful of Posies and knew they would love it!

Homemade Volcano:
3 drops dishwashing liquid
1/2 cup water
3 drops red food coloring
4 Tbsp. baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar (Last) the vinegar causes it to explode

funnel
large pan
plastic or glass bottle
play dough to decorate bottle (optional)

Mix all ingredients in bottle using a funnel, except vinegar. After, add vinegar and watch it explode!

Here's our first picture adding play dough

Here's our explosion!
Super cool!

And they didn't like the smell of vinegar!

They loved it so much we had to do it twice!

Foto Friday #15 Broken

In 2008 Hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana and left a a path of destruction.
Maybe not as bad as Katrina, but for some of my family and friends it was
pretty horrible. We were very lucky, only without power three days.
I could have shown a much worse picture of things broken
from the storm, Gustav or Katrina.
But I thought I would show you what was left of our flag after that storm blew through.
You can say it's broken, but we are not. Another one hangs in its place.
