Letter Vv Week

We began our week of the letter V by reading the
Magic School Bus Blows Its Top
A Book About Volcanoes
By: Gail Herman
They loved the story of how the school children traveled with their teacher in a magic school bus deep in the ocean to discover how volcanoes are born.

After reading the book it was time to make a Homemade Volcano. This was so much fun.
You can read that post HERE if you would like to try this too.

After all the excitement died down we made another volcano. This one will go in their ABC Binders
For this craft I drew a volcano shape on brown construction paper. The kids colored on their volcano and cut them out and glued to another sheet of paper. Then added red, orange, and yellow streamers for the hot lava shooting out.  I found this craft here.

Letter Vv Lapbooks
We read and colored in our Vv books together. The kids worked in their lap books throughout the week, with size sorting violins, tracing and pre-writing the letter Vv, and drawing a volcano in their books. Inspiration for this lap book came from here.

On the back they worked on patterns again this week.

V is for vase
Here I drew the letter V on construction paper and they colored and cut out. Then glued to another sheet of paper. I cut flowers and leaves to add to the top for their vase. These will also go in their binders. Craft found here.

More Vases

We made another vase using TP rolls
 Supplies Used:

  • TP rolls
  • craft sticks
  • glue
  • tempera paint
  • marker
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • paint brush
  • construction paper (I pre-cut the flowers and leaves)

They first painted their TP rolls, and set aside to dry.

Next used their marker to color their craft sticks green for the stem.

Next they gathered their flowers and began putting the pieces together.
And here they all are below.
We made this a couple of years ago as an Easter bouquet for Mom.
We used patterned paper for the flowers.

V is for Vegetables
The kids put together a vegetable plate. I pre-cut these the night before and thought they would enjoy this craft. They talked about the vegetables they were placing on their plates as if it were real!
They said "I really don't like radishes or celery!" Meaning they really didn't want it on their plate! Haha!

They also worked on Vv sounds sheet.

More pre-wrinting

And that was our week!

Homemade Volcano

This morning we began with our letter V by reading a story about Volcanoes!
The Magic School Bus Blows Its Top A Book About Volcanoes
by: Gail Herman
They loved the story of how the school children traveled with their teacher in a magic school bus deep in the ocean to discover how volcanoes are born.

So on with a science experiment!
They could hardly contain their selves when I said we were going to build a miniature volcano.

I found this over at Pocketful of Posies and knew they would love it!

Homemade Volcano:
3 drops dishwashing liquid
1/2 cup water
3 drops red food coloring
4 Tbsp. baking soda
1/2 cup vinegar (Last) the vinegar causes it to explode

funnel
large pan
plastic or glass bottle
play dough to decorate bottle (optional)

Mix all ingredients in bottle using a funnel, except vinegar. After, add vinegar and watch it explode!

Here's our first picture adding play dough

Here's our explosion!
Super cool!

And they didn't like the smell of vinegar!

They loved it so much we had to do it twice!

Letter Uu Week and Introduction to Lap Books

We began our week by reading their U books I made made for them.
We read them together and they color the pages on the inside.
I make a book each week to go with the letter that we are on.

U is for Umbrella
After reading the book we made a fun umbrella with rain drops craft I found over at Mama Jenn.
First we put an umbrella together and and added dots of glue all over the paper.
I always tell them one dot is a lot. :)

And then they were hung on the blinds to drip down to look like rain drops!
They loved watching this!

This is what they look like dry!
These will go into their binders. This was a fun craft!

Introduction to Lap Books

Today I introduced the kids to lap books. I felt like I didn't quite know what I was doing here.
However they seem to enjoy them. One child called it his scrapbook! Love it! :)

Here's the inside. This total concept came from Pocketful of Posies
The Uu tracer sheet is from DLTK-kids

Do you know the umbrella man?

This is the cutest little book! I didn't show the whole book but it's in their lap books. It's sung to the tune Do you know the muffin Man? They really enjoyed it!

The back of their lap books..
They worked on patterns here. I thought that would be fun for them.

Let's Make it RAIN!

Today we did a little science experiment to see if we could make it rain!
For this experiment I needed
a jar
plate
boiling water
and ice

First pour the boiling water about a 1/3 way full in the jar and put the plate on top.
Wait a couple of minutes and add the ice
After a bit you will notice the condensation building
You can see a little in this picture it's dripping along the sides.
I explained to them how heat rises touching the cold plate causing it to drip along the sides.
I found this idea here and you can read more at Weather Wiz Kids they also have a Facebook page

They also worked on tracer/pre-writing It's Raining sheet

Letter U Do A Dot

Umbrella Matching
This will go into their binders

Find the hidden capital U and color it purple
and the lower case u and color orange

And that was our week!

A Rainbow of My Own

We have been on rainbow's this past week, and it has been a lot of fun.
We read the book A Rainbow of My Own by: Don Freeman
It's about a little boy who uses his imagination to play with rainbows.

After reading the book we decided we needed a rainbow of our own! But how?
Here's how...
We filled a glass 3/4 of the way full with water
Put a small mirror inside the the glass of water at an angle. Make sure the mirror is submerged.
Then we placed it in a dark area and shined the flashlight into the mirror to reflect on the wall.
And here were the results below:

Move the flashlight around as needed to look for the rainbow to appear on the wall.

As we moved the flashlight around we started to see the rainbow colors appear.
They were very excited and started naming the colors of the rainbow they saw!

Letter Rr Week

Rainbows
We started off our Letter Rr week by reading
A Rainbow Of My Own by:Don Freeman
This book is about a little boy that uses his imagination to play with rainbows and wants one of his own.

Well, so did we! But how?
So we conducted two science experiments.

You can read how to have a rainbow of your own HERE.
Make a rainbow in a bowl HERE.
These were so much fun!

The next morning I made Rainbow pancakes for them!
They ate the entire batch!

For our craft which will go into their ABC Binders we made retro R's.
I found this idea HERE
I printed an R template and cut strips of construction paper.
They glued each strip across the R to made it look like a Retro R.
When they were done gluing the strips, I cut the R out and they glued to black construction paper.
Here are all of them.
They colored a rainbow tracer from HERE
 And practiced their pre-writing skills.

Another activity we made was Rainbow Crayons

Mouse Paint

We read Mouse Paint by:Ellen Stoll Walsh
This book is about three white mice who find jars of paint and discover the world of color.

For our craft to go along with the book we painted rocks to make Rainbow Mice!
I found the craft HERE.
We used six flat round rocks to paint each one the colors of the rainbow.
Drew a mouse face and glued yarn to match for the tails. I didn't have every color so I used white yarn and  a marker to color it to match the mouse.

Then we didn't know what to do with our mice! So I painted a wooden board white that I found in my garage. Put a hanger on the back, and then I would glue the mice on them.
Well, that was just to plain.
So I used my cricut to cut some letters that spell Rainbow Mice and added a rainbow to it.
Now the Rainbow Mice are hanging on the wall in their toy room.

More activities for the letter Rr

Letter Rr book

Letter Rr Hunt
I made this sheet myself.
Use dot markers to dot the letter Rr's

 I made this sheet myself.
Stamp the matching letter on the line below.
I just purchased these Melissa & Doug stamps.
They are awesome! We used for the sheet above.

Rainbow Art
Their Rainbow Art will go into their binders.

And that was our week!
Rainbows are fun!
