Blueberries for Sal | Unit Lapbook

Awesome book!
This book is about a little girl, her mother, a baby bear, and her mother picking and eating blueberries.

Blueberries for Sal lapbook

This is the inside of our lapbooks, unit found here.
The inside sides are different  things that are found in the book.
Blueberry numbers  to count at the top, and a emergent reader book.
This is a cut and paste short text book teaching besides, on top, next to, etc. This became a great demonstration book for little tots who didn't quit understand, and lots of fun.

They had to glue little bear where each sentence read where he was at. This is where I demonstrated the words.

On the back of our  lapbook the children put a puzzle together to their skill level.

Wednesday-
I found a youtube video of the book.
The book is being read by a solider dad to his children. Yeah, his shirt is off, that I don't get, but I explained to the children that this dad was in the army and far away from his children and found time to send them a video reading a story to them.
One child under stood because their family used Skype when his dad worked in Afghanistan.

Having no place to pick blueberries, we used our imagination a little and pretended to pick blueberries and put in a pail.
I cut out blueberries from construction paper and they glued and counted their berries. They love to glue, so this activity was enjoyable.
This will go in their binders.

After we used a recipe from Homeschool Creations to make Blueberry Freezer Jam!

Ingredients:
3 1/2 c. blueberries, rinsed
5 c. sugar
3/4 tbsp. lemon juice
1  pkg. powered pectin
3/4 c. water

Place in large bowl and add lemon juice,

In saucepan mix pectin and water, bring to boil stirring constantly for 1 min.
Pour pectin mixture in bowl with fruit, stir and mix for 3 min.

Pour in jars, leaving 1/2 in. from top, cover tightly right away and let sit for 24 hours.

Store in freezer.

Makes approx. 6 cups

Read.Learn.Explore. | Cooking with Kids | Guest Post

My name is JDaniel4’s Mom and I host a parenting blog called JDaniel4’s Mom. I write about growing by learning, living, listening and living along side my three and a half year old son.

I am so excited about guest posting on La-La’s Home Daycare today. As the host of Read.Explore.Learn., I have been stopping by to visit and comment on the wonderful posts they have shared on my blog carnival. I am very thankful for the opportunity to visit with you.

Today I am going to share a wonderful children’s book called Cupcake I have come across and a cooking project my son and I did based on the book.

The plain vanilla cupcake featured in the book was very friendly and loved being a part of family of cupcakes. Each cupcake had been decorated with frosting and decoration of various kinds except him. He had no trouble with that. He loved being who is was.
When the day came to an end, he was the only one left on the platter. He is devastated that he has been left behind. He starts to wonder if there is something wrong with him.
Thankfully a plain green candle hears him and hops over to try to help him. The candle listens to his frustration about being plain and ordinary. Then the cupcake listens to the how the candle isn’t as fancy as his siblings either. They are various shapes and colors. This leaves them both sad.
The candle is a real problem solver and he decides to cheer the cupcake up by giving him various toppings like spaghetti, pickles, and pancakes. Each of the toppings he suggests is just not right.
Finally the candle hops on the cupcake to clear away a nut left behind from a topping test . The cupcakes realizes the candle belongs on top for now. The candle on the other hand thinks maybe they will try other things tomorrow. He believes a potato would look dandy.
I love that a plain cupcake and plain candle are just right. Nothing fancy needs to be on the outside to make them better or more appealing. There is an amazing life lesson in this revelation.

After discussing this lesson, we decided to make plain white cupcakes with white frosting.

JDaniel  helped with the mixing.

While I put the batter in the liners, JDaniel sampled it in his own tasting bowel. If I give him a tasting bowl, he doesn’t dip his hand in the mixing bowl until I am done.

Despite the knowledge that plain cupcakes are just right, we decorated ours with sprinkles.

I think they turned out well!

Peanut Butter Cookies

Today we made peanut butter cookies and they are so good! We have made these before, but I wanted to share the recipe with everyone. The recipe is actually for peanut butter sandwich cookies. I've never made the filling before, the entire recipe is located at the end of this post.

Have you ever heard of the blog Mennonite Girls Can Cook?  This is where the recipe came from.
You must visit their blog, their blog name is the God's honest truth! I love to use their recipes.

Oh and the best part of this recipe is that I had everything on hand!

Well here we all are gathered at the bar with all the ingredients we need to get started on the cookies.
And here I was totally impressed with this four year old who could crack an egg open! And not get any of the shell in the mix! He told me he could do it, and yes he did. He said that was his first time too.

Each child took a turn adding and mixing ingredients.
And just ten or twelve minutes in the oven...yum!

Enjoy!
:)

Homemade Pudding Pops

I found this recipe at the Thrifty Ninja and thought, yep, I haven't had that since I was a child. And it's something different than having a popsicle  everyday.
So we are following the directions on the pudding box.
here having already poured the pudding mix in the bowl...

When ready to serve put cup under running hot water a few seconds to loosen from cup.

They are so good!
Thanks for stopping by!

Bird Nest Easter Cookies

Last Easter we made these super easy cookies for our Easter party, & it was so much fun!

Items we used
Betty Crocker sugar cookie package and white icing
different colors of food coloring
coconut
speckled jelly beans
circle cookie cutters
rolling pin
ziploc bags

Here are the bakers taking turns rolling the dough and cutting the cookies.

After the cookies were finished baking,
I added food coloring and coconut to the ziploc bags....
 and now they shake...
 and shake and shake!
Now that they have mixed the colors to the coconut...
 it's time to decorate!
First Icing on the cookies, coconut, then the jelly beans!
The icing will hold the coconut in place (bird nest), jelly beans for eggs.
The little guy with his thumb in his mouth looks like he's had enough huh?
And we are done!
Yummy!
:)
